SmartTMS Mexico Shipping Guide
How to correctly enter, validate, and troubleshoot Mexico addresses in SmartTMS using Smarty
Overview
As of August 2026, SmartTMS supports Mexico address validation and shipping through Smarty, our address validation service. This guide helps booking agents correctly enter and manage Mexico addresses in SmartTMS.
Mexico addresses work differently than US and Canadian addresses in SmartTMS. Following the steps below prevents validation errors and ensures shipments book successfully.
Important: Smarty may return a sub-administrative area name (neighborhood or district) rather than the commonly used city name for some Mexico postal codes. Always use the city name returned by the search results — not the name from existing records or the customer's address label.
New Mexico Addresses
When entering a Mexico address for the first time, always use the zip code search approach to ensure the correct city name is captured.
-
- On the Location & Time page, set the Country field to Mexico.
- Leave the City and State/Province fields blank.
- Enter the zip code only in the Zip/Postal Code field.
- Click the magnifying glass search icon next to the Zip/Postal Code field.
- Select the correct city/state result from the search dialog.
- The City and State/Province fields auto-populate — don't change these.
- Complete the rest of the address and proceed.
Do not type the city name manually. It may not match what Smarty expects and will cause a validation error.
Existing Mexico Addresses in the Address Book
Saved addresses may have city names that no longer match Smarty. They'll fail validation until updated.
-
- Open the address book entry.
- Clear the City field.
- Enter the zip code and click the search icon.
- Select the correct city from results.
- Save the address.
Understanding Mexico City Names in Smarty
Mexico postal codes don't always map to one well-known city name — Smarty may return a specific neighborhood or municipality instead.
Example: Postal code 90860 returns Acuamanala De Miguel Hidalgo, not the broader metro name. Use whatever Smarty returns, and communicate that name to the customer if it differs from what they expect.
Mexico Rating
Mexico rating is supported via FedEx Freight for applicable lanes. If no rates return after correct address entry, contact your account manager to confirm carrier/lane configuration.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Likely Cause | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Validation error: city/zip invalid | City typed manually or saved pre-Aug 2026 | Clear city field, use search icon to select Smarty-validated city |
| No results in search dialog | City/state entered, narrowing results too much | Clear city/state, search by zip only |
| No rates returned | Carrier/lane not configured for Mexico | Contact account manager |
