How do I troubleshoot missing Volume LTL (VLTL) Quotes?

If a Volume LTL (VLTL) quote does not return in the SmartTMS, follow these checks:

1. Confirm VLTL for Client

  • Navigate to the "system settings" tab in the SmartTMS on the left side of the screen  and filter by your client in the top right hand corner.
  • Check the "Client Account Settings" tab under the Global System Settings
  • Look for "P44_Volume_LTL_Rating_Enabled

While VLTL is a standard program for all clients that is enabled, it can be disabled by request.

2. Confirm Shipment Qualifies
  • Weight: Must be 5,000–18,000 lbs
  • Dimensions: Required (L x W x H must be entered)

Missing or invalid data = no VLTL rate to be returned.

3. Check Lane Availability

  • VLTL is dynamic carrier pricing
  • Rates depend on current carrier capacity

If VLTL is not returned, there is no carrier offering VLTL on that lane at that time.

4. Test a Known VLTL Lane

Use a test lane to confirm system functionality

  • Rating to Dallas, TX 75247 from a client's location often returns VLTL

If VLTL returns on a test lane but not the original, the issue is lane availability.

5. Verify Rating Method

  • Rate shipment in the client’s current system (KC TMS or Excellence)
  • No special mode selection required, rate as standard LTL

VLTL quote will return if available.

6. Identify VLTL Quotes

When choosing a carrier rate:

  • Mode shows Volume LTL
  • Carrier Name field includes (Volume LTL)

If VLTL does not return, re-rate later or try a slightly adjusted pickup time or date, if possible.
Carrier availability may change based on time of day and capacity.

Key Takeaway

Missing VLTL quotes are usually due to carrier availability, not system issues. VLTL is not guaranteed on every lane or at every time.
